SUMMARY OF ASSIGNMENT
Under general direction of the Director of Special Education and Special Education Supervisor, a mental health counselor provides services that enable special education students whose behavior, with respect to frequency, intensity, and duration over time, significantly impacts their educational success and/or that of others. This position also works in conjunction with the student(s) school team to assist the student(s) in benefiting from specially designed programs and an overall educational experience/process.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

1. Function as an integral member of the Pre-Referral Team, Individual Education Program (IEP) team and/or Student Intervention Team (SIT).
2. Assist in the development of an IEP in cases in which services are appropriate.
3. Work with IEP students, families, school staff, and the larger community in designing interventions to address needs identified on specific students.
4. Work individually with IEP students on specific goals and objectives that include, but not limited to, social skills, anger management, self-control, problem solving, peer/adult relations, and interactions.
5. Facilitate structured support groups for IEP students. At the professional discretion of the MHC, general education, and resource student may also be included in these groups. Possible topics for groups may include, but are not limited to: Social Skills Training (SST); Anger Management; Problem Solving; Impulse Control.
6. Documents and interprets characteristics, need and progress of IEP students to parents and school personnel, in group or individual setting via oral of written communications (i.e., progress reports).
7. Collaborate with school team and parents in planning and developing support programs to serve the preventive and developmental needs of students in general education and special needs population who demonstrates intense and frequent behavioral issues.
8. Assist teachers, administrators, and school personnel in integrating specialized information into the general education curriculum (i.e., developing and implementing goals and objectives, consistent with individual student’s specially designed instruction).
9. Organize, prepare and/or administer behavioral assessment tools and procedures on students who may be referred for special education services due to on-going behavioral concerns throughout the school setting.
10. Maintains sufficient records of cases for use by school staff, parents, and outside agencies when appropriate (i.e., progress reports, IEP, and/or end of the year summaries).
11. Write end of year summary on IEP students that reflect overall progress as it related to student’s IEP goals and objectives.
12. Serve as liaison between school, parents, and outside community agencies in order to coordinate services for IEP students.
13. Participate and provide information in special education placement staffing for IEP students.
14. Network and collaborate with community service providers who work specifically with IEP students.
15. May provide and/or participate in staff development or in-service training programs.
16. Consults with teachers, administrators, school personnel, and parents concerning the development, coordination, and/or extension of services to those students needing specialized programs.
17. Develops, maintains, and utilizes effective listening and communication skills with parents, teacher, administrators, school personnel, and community service providers.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

 

Education and Experience
1. Washington State Educational Staff Associated Certification (ESA) in Counseling or Social Work
2. Master’s Degree in school social work, school counseling or school psychologist.
3. Previous work experience working with children in school settings.

1. Knowledge of and ability to use community resources regarding non-school issues affecting student’s progress.
2. Knowledge of and ability to use instructional skills and principles of learning.
3. Ability to communicate effectively with students, parents, staff, and volunteers in a diverse environment.
4. Ability to provide leadership for building activities and to adjust to new situations and guidance concepts.
5. Ability to initiate and maintain required and adequate student and office records.
6. Ability to facilitate the educational development of students.
7. Ability to lift 20 pounds and push/pull 40 pounds.

 

Certification and Licenses

Washington State ESA Certificate in Counseling or Social Work

WORKING CONDITIONS
Work is performed a regular elementary or secondary school building. Exposure to normal amounts of dust and fumes from office machines and occasional loud noises. Ability to use arms, hands and fingers; lift 20 pounds and push/pull 40 pounds; and to sit for prolonged periods of time are all required.
