SUMMARY OF ASSIGNMENT

Under the direction of the Director of Maintenance this position is responsible for the maintenance and repair of grounds facilities and for the repair of equipment requiring metal work; playground equipment; irrigation systems; outdoor surfaces including hardtop, resilient, natural and artificial turf; drainage systems including drywells, catch basins, and storm drains; outside structures, including fence lines, gates, flagpoles; sports and playfield activity preparation; program and shop equipment. This position is subject to Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) drug and alcohol testing as provided by District Policy #5259.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
1. Perform work to build, install, modify and repair facilities in a safe and efficient manner.
2. Assure that work performed meet applicable local, state, and federal codes.
3. Prepare requisitions and specifications for supplies and materials. Assist in the preparation of contract specifications. Assist in technical inspections to assure compliance with specifications.
4. Assure satisfactory completion of all assigned work orders in conformance with all applicable codes and district policy and procedures.
5. Maintain assigned tools and equipment.
6. Work cooperatively with outside contractors and assist in verify completion of contracted work to specifications.
7. Assist in identifying and evaluating needs for maintenance work and inclusion into a planned maintenance program.
8. Irrigation systems: Repair, modify irrigation systems as needed. Manage timers and valves, ensure irrigation system functionality and efficiency. Ability to maintain and update District as-built drawings.
9. Provide assistance to the supervisor when requested in the preparation of reports and other required documentation in maintaining facility records.
10. Maintains ornamental grass areas, sports fields, play fields, undeveloped grass areas, shrub beds, flower beds, trees, and landscaped areas using hand power tools and equipment, and chemicals.
11. Maintains and prepares athletic fields and other sports surfaces for use including slicing, thatching, rolling, dragging, layout and relining.
12. Performs minor repair work and assists in the major construction and repair of playground equipment, small structures, drainage systems, sewer systems, and fencing, including trenching and backfilling for underground utilities.
13. Removes and disposes of trees, vegetation, and debris; remove small structures.
14. Provide input when requested concerning the most appropriate manner of repair, replacement, modification, or new installation work considering cost, timelines, and equipment of all applicable county, state and federal codes.
15. Stadium Cleaning: tasks include, empties trash cans, cleans restrooms and locker rooms, dusts and spot mops floor areas, vacuums and spot cleans carpeted areas, cleans sinks, cleans windows, fills all types of dispensers, dusts high/low, changes light bulbs only when more than one custodian is present, cleans drinking fountains, washes walls, preps and applies floor finish to tile floors when needed, preps, sweeps stairwells, entry ways, and thresholds, cleaning surfaces in Concession Stand, assembles and disassembles equipment for special events in the stadium, cleans all custodial equipment at end of shift.
16. Stadium Outdoor Cleaning: tasks include: maintain playfields, running track, clean bleacher areas. Operate large cleaning equipment such as field groomers and sweepers.
17. Stadium Athletic Equipment: ensure equipment is properly stored, assist in setting up and removal of athletic equipment, place and remove protective covers, and assist with access for staff and users.
18. Work cooperatively with supervisor when requested in providing realistic labor and material cost estimates.
19. Provide requested input on causes of failures discovered during preventive maintenance inspections and offer suggestions of correction when requested. Assist in the analysis of preventive maintenance inspection findings and causes of failures. Assist in determining and recommending modifications to work practices or preventive maintenance frequencies.
20. Maintain up-to-date knowledge and expertise. Determine and request training to maintain skills relevant to the changing technology.
21. Respond at any time needed to emergencies which endanger life and district property and assist in restoration work and prevention of further damage.
22. Provide preventative maintenance inspections, and assist in analysis of causes of failures. Assist in determining and recommending modifications to work practices or preventive maintenance frequencies.
23. Assist other crafts in the performance of their duties.
24. Performs other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience
1. High school diploma or equivalent (GED)

And

2. Five (5) years of recent successful experience in private enterprise or government agency related to the responsibilities listed in the job description.

Or

3. Successful completion of a trade school course in one or more of the assigned areas of responsibility and three (3) years of recent successful experience with related responsibilities.
4. Demonstrated two (2) years of experience as a lead occasionally directing the work of others.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
1. Ability to climb ladders and work on rooftops of various heights and inclinations.
2. Ability to lift 50 pounds to chest height from floor level and perform all normal pulling, pushing, and lifting activities.
3. Ability to work in adverse weather conditions.
4. Ability to weld, both gas and arc proficiently.
5. Ability to read and review blueprints, and to prepare schematics and diagrams. Ability to perform computational skills; work with statistical data and data presented in graphical format.
6. Ability to treat information in a professional manner and preserve the integrity of confidential information.
7. Ability to work independently and make decisions in the absence of the supervisor or lead groundskeeper.
8. Ability to speak, write and understand English.
9. Ability to follow written and oral directions.
10. Ability to flex hours or shift changes.

Certification & Licenses
1. Background check, fingerprinting and pre-employment drug test.
2. Valid Washington State License Class A Driver’s License and proof of a safe driving record demonstrated by a current 5 year drivers extract (with the ability to earn within 6 months of hire).
3. Current and valid Safety Inspector Certification and successful completion of the National Playground Safety Institute Course (with ability to earn within 1 year of hire).
4. Valid Washington State Department of Labor & Industries Basic First Aid Card with CPR.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS
1. Successful completion of a welding trade school course.
2. Successful completion of an irrigation system design and maintenance course.
3. Eight (8) years of recent experience in one or more of the assigned areas of responsibility in private enterprise or government agency.

WORKING CONDITIONS
Hours may vary depending on district needs. Requires sitting, turning, lifting, pulling, and pushing objects using proper lifting, pulling, and pushing techniques weighing 50 pounds. Must be able to lift 50 pounds from floor to chest. Must be able to use fingers, hands, arms, legs, vision, hearing, sit or stand for prolonged period of time. Routinely requires dexterity and balance. Requires driving in normal and adverse weather conditions. May be exposed to inclement weather. May be required to drive in congested areas for extended periods. Must be able to bend, stretch, twist, walk, reach, carry, push, stoop, crouch, and hear. Far and near visual acuity, depth perception. Requires mental concentration under various traffic and road conditions. Requires occasionally work on evenings and weekends. Exposures will include viewing VDT screens, exposure to dust, fumes, infectious diseases, occasional noise, and various road and traffic conditions.
