SUMMARY OF ASSIGNMENT

Under direction of the Director of Special Education, serve as liaison administrator between the Director of Special Education and the principals of the District in providing direction and development of curriculum and instruction and other matters related to special education. Plan, implement, monitor, and evaluate special education programs and services under the direct supervision of the Director of Special Education.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

     Instructional Services

  1. Supervise the special education program including planning, implementing, monitoring, and evaluating services.
  2. Ensure due process compliance of special education activities, including assessment and student placement.
  3. Ensure an appropriate curriculum, program, and continuum of services are developed and implemented for special education eligible students, including 504 accommodations.
  4. Keep District staff and community informed of the special education program.
  5. Work with the Directors of School Programs to ensure coordination of special education activities with existing District curriculum, programs, and state and District assessments.
  6. Oversee the development of special education summer services.
  7. Participate in the planning, delivery of services, and equipping of special education classrooms.
  8. Work with the Transportation Department to plan transportation for special education students.
  9. Coordinate speech, hearing, occupational and physical therapy services for the District.
  10. Coordinate placement of disabled students, Child Find activities, de-institutionalized student programs, and other programs serving special education students.
  11. Analyze special education documents to ensure due process compliance, including assessment and student placement.
  12. Review student records and record-keeping practices to ensure an appropriate curriculum, program, and continuum of services are developed and implemented for special education eligible students, including 504 accommodations.

 

     Financial Management

  1. Assist with budget planning for special education.
  2. Assist with completion of federal, state, and local special education reports to ensure accuracy of information and filing deadlines are met in order to obtain special education funds.

 

      General Administration and Leadership

 

  1. Serve as a task group leader for special education related tasks as directed.
  2. Develop and recommend policies and programs addressing the needs of students with disabilities who are eligible for special education program placement.
  3. Keep informed of all legal requirements governing the special education area.
  4. Communicate with District staff and community to improve cooperation and develop an understanding of existing programs.

      Personnel

  1. Assist with the hiring, supervision, and evaluation of certificated and classified staff.
  2. Coordinate and monitor the allocation of special education certificated and classified staff to the buildings and overall program.
  3. Evaluate occupational therapists, physical therapists, school psychologists, vision specialists, and other staff as assigned.
  4. Assist in the planning of departmental and District staff development/in-service activities.

      Professional Preparation and Scholarship

  1. Continue professional study and activity.
  2. Utilize current knowledge on educational and administrative matters.

  1. Generally respond positively to suggestions for professional improvement.
  2. Modify own behavior on the basis of self-appraisal.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

      Education and Experience

  1. Master’s Degree in Education with a major in Special Education or appropriate related field.
  2. Successful experience as a classroom teacher and/or in a support position.

      Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  1. Evidence of experience and training needed to perform the functions described in the Supervisor of Special Education job description.
  2. Skill in providing educational leadership.
  3. Demonstrated skill in written and oral communication.
  4. Ability to interact positively with students, professional associates, and patrons of the District.
  5. Knowledge of the rules for programs providing services to children who are served through the special education programs in the CloverParkSchool District.
  6. Knowledge of current instructional methods, materials, and trends in special education.
  7. Knowledge of state and federal rules and regulations for special education.
  8. Knowledge of program development including assessment strategies.

     Certification and Licenses

  1. Continue professional certification and study.
  2. Washington State Teaching Certification with appropriate endorsement.
  3. Washington State Administrative Certificate

DESIRABLE QUALIFCATIONS

  1. Successful experience in public school administration and supervision.
  2. Successful experience in program development.
  3. Washington State Administrative credential.

 

WORKING CONDITIONS

 

Work is performed in an office environment.  Some travel to and between school sites is necessary.  Must be able to use fingers, hands, and arms; lift 20 pounds; and listen carefully and focus while filtering out normal office noise.  Teamwork and high productivity requirements create frequent extra hour days, attendance at meetings before and after work, and weekend work.
