SUMMARY OF ASSIGNMENT

Under general direction of the Building Administrator, with input from the Career and College Readiness Director, assists high school students and staff by establishing and maintaining the Career Research Center.  Provides information to assist students with career and college readiness/preparation, and assisting students in transition preparedness from high school to post-secondary.  Assists the vocational counselor to ensure compliance with the State/District Career Guidance Goals.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  1. Organizes and maintains a Career Research Center with a variety of career and college-oriented activities, books and materials to include:
  • Presenting information to students regarding career and college planning, job readiness, resumes, etc.;
  • Assisting with various programs in Career Research Center (e.g., PSAT, state testing, college entrance exams, Business Week, Boys and Girls state, FAFSA night);
  • Assisting with disseminating monthly senior year updates and scholarship information.
  • Coordinating college and military recruiter visits;
  • Publishing college visits information;
  • Tracking and communicating student college acceptance including school site recognition (i.e., banners, pennants);
  • Assisting with the implementation of student high school and beyond plans, post-secondary plans, and student applications to post-secondary schools/programs;
  • Assisting with recording college activities and CTE student data (i.e., dual credit, CTE completers, industry certifications, and national assessments); and
  • Assisting with student graduation details;
  • Assisting students with financial aid scholarship applications, college applications, resumes, and preparing for job interviews.
  1. Conducts career exploration assessments and helps students utilize assessment results to create a plan for their high school and post secondary education.
  2. Coordinates with counselors, teachers and administrators to develop a process to unify information from students’ portfolios.
  3. Supports development of professional and technical education programs at the high schools based on evolving employer demands in the District’s geographic area by acting as the focal point for employers to post jobs for students. Forwards requests for volunteers to respective classroom advisors.
  4. Coordinates and assists teachers and curriculum staff with implementation of District comprehensive counseling curriculum, integrated career education activities, and college visits.
  5. Serves as a resource and contact person to instructional high school staff concerning school to work transitions.
  6. Provides support to teachers in the area of language arts, reading, math, and social emotional development.
  7. Provides other essential functions as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

 

Education and Experience

  1. Bachelor’s degree in business, education, counseling, or a related field is required.
  2. Three (3) years of successful experience working with secondary students.

 

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  1. Knowledge of materials used in career decision-making, including software, books and tests.
  2. Knowledge of decision-making techniques for career decisions.
  3. Ability to build relationships and collaborate with agencies outside the District.
  4. Ability to communicate effectively with students, teachers, parents, school staff and the community members from diverse backgrounds.
  5. Ability to effectively present programs to business and community agencies.
  6. Ability to maintain punctual and regular attendance.
  7. Ability to use computers and maintain records.

 

Certification and Licenses

  1. Fingerprinting and background check at the expense of the employee (Washington State Patrol & FBI background clearance).
  2. Must have a valid Washington State driver’s license and proof of insurance.

 

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS

  1. Bilingual
  2. Training or experience in counseling
  3. First Aid and CPR card.

 

WORKING CONDITIONS

Essential functions are performed in a regular high school building.  Employee may be required to sit or stand for prolonged periods of time; use fingers, hands, and arms for computer skills; and provide a professional appearance when meeting with the public.
